As an Assistant in Nursing at FMC, you'll work alongside Enrolled and Registered Nurses to deliver hands-on patient care, carrying out fundamental nursing tasks within a plan of care developed by a Registered Nurse or Midwife. You'll operate under their supervision at all times — whether directly or indirectly — ensuring every action you take is guided, supported, and aligned to the best outcomes for patients in your care.

About the role:

Reporting to the Nurse Manager, you will play an important role in supporting patients with cognitive impairment and complex behaviours through proactive engagement, early intervention and person-centred care. Working as part of the CALMR (Care, Awareness, Leadership and Management of Responsive Behaviour) team, your responsibilities will include:

• Promoting safe mobility and independence for patients where appropriate,

• Supporting patients to engage in meals, hydration and daily activities,

• Facilitating meaningful diversionary and therapeutic engagement activities,

• Implementing falls prevention and patient safety strategies,

• Monitoring patient wellbeing and escalating concerns to the Registered Nurse,

• Utilising non-pharmacological approaches to prevent and de-escalate agitation and distress,

• Supporting the fundamentals of care, including comfort, nutrition, hydration and toileting needs,

• Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes and experiences,

• Contributing to a culture of safety, system learning and continuous improvement through the CALMR model of care

About you:

• Proof of successful completion of first year Bachelor of Nursing and enrolment in second year in a recognised tertiary facility,
• Effective verbal and written communication skills,
• Working within the boundaries of their education and skill preparation, in the provision of nursing/midwifery care in the healthcare, setting in accordance with the appropriate standards of practice,
• Caring for patients with dementia,
• Lifestyle or memory support role
