Medical/Lab Science is the field of Health Science concerned with the production and analysis of accurate and reliable test results in chemistry, haematology, immunology, and microbiology. This important work informs diagnosis and treatment of disease. Medical Laboratory Science can also be applied to medical research and development, biotechnology, mortuary technology, and veterinary pathology. Employment opportunities exist in hospital and community laboratories, private clinics, government agencies, industry, research, and the armed forces.

Medical Laboratory Scientists work behind-the-scenes in laboratories where they undertake testing of blood, tissue, and fluid samples, and provide diagnostic and assessment services. Medical Laboratory Scientists have completed a degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Laboratory Medicine. They have a thorough understanding of Biology, Zoology, Physics and Chemistry; and have practical and technical skills to operate laboratory equipment and maintain a safe laboratory environment. Medical Laboratory Scientists may be responsible for managing the laboratory and a team of workers, and often collaborate with the wider health care team.

Medical Laboratory Technicians take samples of blood, tissue, and fluids; run tests and operate and maintain diagnostic laboratory equipment. They work under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientists or pathologists. They have completed a Diploma level qualification specialising in pathology or medical laboratory operations.
