Orthoptics is the discipline within the health sciences that involves the study of the visual system, with an emphasis on conditions which affect binocular vision and eye muscles and movements. Specialised technology and tests are used to investigate the patient’s vision, to determine the type and extent of eye disease or disorder, and to assess their surgical and non-surgical requirements. Orthoptists and Ophthalmologists will often work collaboratively together in investigating and managing diseases of the eye.

Orthoptists are eye health professionals who work independently or in multidisciplinary teams and in a range of settings, including in hospitals, private practices, and community health clinics. They work with adults and children to examine, diagnose, and treat eye diseases and disorders. Orthoptists provide services to guide the Ophthalmologist in surgical interventions, and they can undertake pre- and post-operative care of patients. Orthoptists have undertaken a Bachelor of Orthoptics, or Master of Orthoptics after a relevant health science degree.
