- Highly developed consultation, negotiation and stakeholder management skills across internal and external partnerships.
What You Need
- Registered Nurse and/or Midwife with current AHPRA registration.
- Minimum of a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, or a sole qualification in Mental Health Nursing.
- Demonstrated senior leadership experience in healthcare education and workforce development.
- Ability to travel across Monash Health sites as required.
- Master's degree or higher qualification in Education, Leadership, Health Management or a related field (desirable).
- Professional membership of a relevant nursing, leadership or education organisation (desirable).
About the Department / Program

Start your Speech Pathology career somewhere you can learn, grow and feel supported from day one. Join Monash Health’s Allied Health Mental Health Graduate Program and spend your graduate year building your confidence, developing your clinical skills and discovering where a career in mental health can take you.
About the Role
We are excited to welcome applications from Graduate Speech Pathologists for our 2027 Allied Health Mental Health Graduate Program. Commencing in February 2027, this 12-month program provides the opportunity to gain experience across a range of mental health settings, supporting children, young people, adults and older adults across community and inpatient services.
Throughout your graduate year, you’ll develop the foundations of mental health practice, including assessment, formulation and therapeutic intervention, while building your confidence and professional identity as a Speech Pathologist working in mental health.
Importantly, you won’t be expected to figure it all out on your own.
You’ll be supported by a dedicated Speech Pathology Clinical Educator, regular supervision and a structured learning program designed to help you develop both your Speech Pathology practice and broader mental health knowledge and skills. This is a graduate year designed for learning – giving you the support, experiences and opportunities to grow into the clinician you want to become.
About the Program
Monash Health’s Mental Health Program provides care across the lifespan, with services spanning infant, child and youth, adult and older adult mental health. Our services include inpatient, community and rehabilitation programs alongside specialist services, giving our graduates exposure to the breadth and diversity of mental health care.
The Allied Health Mental Health Graduate Program is embedded within our mental health workforce and has been designed specifically to support clinicians at the beginning of their careers.
You’ll join a multidisciplinary graduate cohort that may include Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Exercise Physiologists, Dietitians, Music Therapists and Art Therapists – giving you the opportunity to learn not only from experienced clinicians, but with and from other graduates beginning their careers alongside you.
About You
You’re an early-career Speech Pathologist with a genuine interest in mental health and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of consumers, carers and families. You don’t need to have everything figured out yet. We’re looking for someone who is curious, compassionate and ready to learn.
You’ll bring:
- A genuine interest in developing your Speech Pathology career in mental health
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and professional growth
- An understanding of the important role communication plays in a person’s wellbeing, relationships, participation and recovery
- A commitment to person-centred, family-inclusive and evidence-based care
- A collaborative approach and willingness to learn from consumers, carers, families, lived experience and clinical colleagues
- Compassion, empathy and respect for the individual experiences and communication needs of the people you support
- A commitment to safe, ethical and high-quality practice.
You will be an early-career Speech Pathologist with less than two years of professional experience and hold:
- Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology), Bachelor of Health Science (Speech Pathology), Master of Speech Pathology or recognised equivalent degree (including overseas qualified speech pathologists who have completed a mutual recognition agreement or competency assessment via Speech Pathology Australia in the
previous two years) - Eligible for membership as a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) with Speech Pathology Australia
Why Join Us?
Your graduate year should be about more than getting through your first year – it should give you the foundations for the clinician you want to become. At Monash Health, we know that starting your career can be exciting, challenging and sometimes a little daunting. That’s why our graduate program surrounds you with support, learning and connection from the beginning.
You’ll have access to:
- Dedicated Speech Pathology clinical education and support – helping you translate your university learning into confident clinical practice.
- Protected learning time – dedicated space to learn, reflect and develop without learning becoming something you need to squeeze in around everything else.
- Regular supervision – including fortnightly one-to-one clinical supervision, multidisciplinary group supervision and peer support.
- A graduate community around you – start your career alongside other allied health graduates who are learning, developing and navigating their first year too.
- Exposure to diverse areas of mental health – build experience across different age groups, settings and models of care while discovering the areas that interest you most.
- Learning from experienced clinicians and specialists – access professional development delivered by Allied Health Mental Health Educators and clinical experts.
- Discovery Days – explore different programs and areas of practice to help you think about where you’d like your career to take you next.
Most importantly, you’ll be joining a program that expects you to be a graduate. You’ll be supported to ask questions, build your confidence, develop your clinical identity and grow throughout the year.
Come as a graduate. Leave with the confidence, experience and connections to take the next step in your mental health career.
As a Monash Health employee, you’ll also have access to benefits including salary packaging, health and wellbeing initiatives, free vaccinations, discounted private health insurance and access to selected health services for you and your family.
For a confidential discussion and to explore this opportunity further, please reach out to Fiona Barden, Speech Patholgoy Clinical Educator via email on [email protected].
